That song they sing called "benson arizona" epitomizes their plight. Just a bunch of 'average joes' in space subjected to whatever space has to offer them. However, they do have a choice in their actions. They can either work together, or work for their own form of 'justice'. Of course, self preservation wins and they choose that path.

I think it also epitomizes ridley scott's career path, though more indirectly. For the trained eye, you can see the connections to "alien" and other "Ridley Scott" branded works....
